Parasitic diseases including soil-transmitted helminthiasis, schistosomiasis, filaria, and malaria, among others, are still considered serious public health threats in many parts of the country. Diagnosis of their etiologic agents is mainly based upon the microscopic identification of the morphological characteristics of eggs and larvae of helminths, cysts, and trophozoites of protozoans, and oocyst of coccidians. Although microscopy is a basic technique, laboratory technologists need to be constantly refreshed and updated with correct techniques and practices in specimen collection, processing, and identification of these parasites. This whole day session will be divided into an interactive lecture and laboratory workshop, to be facilitated by the staff of the National Reference Laboratory for Malaria and Other Parasites. The trainees will individually perform hands-on processing of specimens and microscopic identification of the different parasites of public health importance
